New Mayors Elected in Thane, Ulhasnagar & Kalyan-Dombivli

After years under administrative rule, civic democracy has returned with a bang in major municipal corporations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). On 3–4 February 2026, four key cities — Thane, Ulhasnagar, Mira-Bhayandar and Kalyan-Dombivli — elected their new mayors and deputy mayors, reflecting not just political change but a renewed focus on inclusive leadership, public trust and governance for the future.

Let’s dive into the newly appointed leaders who are all set to steer these cities toward growth and community-centric development.

1. Thane — Sharmila Pimplolkar (Mayor) & Krishna Patil (Deputy Mayor)

In Thane, Sharmila Pimplolkar of the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction) was elected unopposed as the 23rd Mayor of Thane Municipal Corporation — becoming one of the few women to ever hold this title. Her election ended a four-year period under administrative rule and was possible due to the Mahayuti alliance’s strong majority in the civic house.

Her deputy, Krishna Patil from the BJP, brings strategic balance to the leadership. The united front pledges to prioritise infrastructure upgrades, citizen services and sustainable urban planning.

2. Ulhasnagar — Ashwini Kamlesh Nikam (Mayor) & Amar Lund (Deputy)

In a noteworthy political shift, former rivals in Ulhasnagar knit a strategic alliance, and Ashwini Kamlesh Nikam of Shiv Sena emerged as the new Mayor of Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation. Her leadership is backed by a coalition including BJP and Shiv Sena factions that promises stability and teamwork in local governance.

Amar Lund of the BJP will serve as the Deputy Mayor, reinforcing collaborative governance models that residents hope will translate into better public services.

3. Mira-Bhayandar — Dimple Mehta (Mayor) & Dhruvkishor Patil (Deputy)

In Mira-Bhayandar, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demonstrated strong electoral support as Dimple Mehta was elected Mayor with a decisive majority. Accompanied by Deputy Mayor Dhruvkishor Patil, the leadership promises a stronger civic voice and accelerated development in housing, sanitation and community well-being.

Their victory underscored the city’s changing dynamics and the public’s eagerness for development-oriented governance.

4. Kalyan-Dombivli — Harshali Chaudhary (Mayor) & Rahul Damle (Deputy)

After six long years under administrator control, Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation finally saw political leadership restored. Harshali Chaudhary of Shiv Sena now serves as Mayor with Rahul Damle of the BJP as her Deputy — both elected unopposed in a smooth, transparent process.

This return to democratic civic governance has sparked optimism among residents who are hopeful about improved accountability and civic responsiveness.

💡 What This Leadership Change Means for the Future

These mayoral elections aren’t just routine political appointments — they symbolise the return of democratic representation to cities that had spent years under bureaucratic administration. Civic agendas now include:

✅ Enhanced urban infrastructure
✅ People-centric governance

Moreover, the prominence of women mayors across multiple cities reflects a growing trend of inclusive leadership, giving strong voices to women in civic administration.
